About the Artist/Site
Cambodian refugee Prum is ornamenting his trailer home in the Modernette Mobile Home Park in central Tempe. He and his family immigrated to the United States when he was 32 years old; his father was a survivor of the southeast Asian wars of the last mid-century, and the family’s immigration was sponsored by an institute in California, landing them in Oakland. Later Prum moved to Tempe, AZ.
Now, he works out of his mobile home, fixing televisions. His artwork includes found objects as well as natural materials and a compilation of industrial detritus gathered from the dumps. Rocks are painted and wrapped to resemble animals; constructions of myriad materials are built up on concrete blocks. He particularly likes round things, and, even more specifically, kinetic materials that are referential to the cycle of life, so fans, turbines, and wheels play an important role. Yet he does not consider himself a religious person. Some works also appear to have a somewhat sexual orientation.
As Prum’s trailer is close to the busy Apache Boulevard in Tempe, it is easily viewable from the road. If Prum is home, he is happy to show some of his work to viewers.
